Project news

Projects approved: Children with special needs in Sudan and Somaliland are helped
November 24, 2010 - Somalia and Sudan are countries that have gone through prolonged crises. Children are often those who suffer the most during a civil war. Children suffer harm when they see and experience gun shots and grenades, people whom are killed, and especially when they lose their mother or father or another family member.

Children with such experiences are often traumatized and get mentally impaired. Some parents do not know what to do with their child and for the sake of the family and the community the child is labelled as ‘crazy’ or ‘impossible’. In worst case scenarios the child is tied or chained to a bed or a pole because the behaviour of the parents makes the child hyperactive and difficult to control. This leads to lasting mentally disablement.

IAS has worked with this group of children since 2001 in Somaliland. Now the concept is spread to more cities in Somaliland and to the Nuba Mountains in Sudan which was one of the worst battle zones during the Sudanese civil war between North and South. IAS has received two grants of a total of DKK 4,673,253 from the Project Fund (Danida) with the objective to help these children out of their situation to a normal life with other boys and girls in society and get them in school. The projects will also strengthen the civil society and mobilize them to create change deeply into society. Parents with disabled children are often very isolated and desperate. In addition the projects will strengthen the capacity and abilities of the governments to deliver education for children with special needs.

The project is implemented by IAS’ skilled and long term local partners (Sudan: NCDO and Baraa, Somaliland: SASE) with the assistance of IAS country offices. In this way a successful implementation of the projects, even in fragile states as Sudan and Somalia, are secured!

The project in Sudan is implemented from 01.12.2010-30.11.2012 and was granted DKK 1,676,550.
The project in Somaliland is implemented from 01.12.2010-30.11.2013 and was granted DKK 2,996,703.
