Mogadishu relief project

STOCKHOLM, October 30, 2007 - International Aid Services has recieved funds from Swedish Mission Council (SMC) / Sida for a relief intervention in Mogadishu, Somalia. The project is called 'Livelihood support to Internally Displaced Persons (IDP’s) in Mogadishu' and we will implement the activities together with SAACID, our local partner.

The proposed project will try to mitigate human suffering in Mogadishu area by providing Non-Food Items (NFIs), constructions of pit latrines and hygiene training to the displaced people. 2,300 displaced families currently camping in makeshifts in different parts of Mogadishu will benefit in the project. These families translate to about 5,200 persons.

The sub-goals of the project are:

1. To provide temporary shelter.
2. To provide essential households equipment/tools.
3. To improve the hygiene conditions.
4. To involve the local community.

Indicators:

1. 1200 households will have received plastic sheeting.
2. 1200 households will have received cups, plates and sufuria.
3. 50 pit latrines will have been constructed.
4. 5 committees will have been formed, one in every camp.

Time frame:

November - December 2007



Tsunami response

BRANDE, Jan 19, 2005 - Danida through Danish Missionary Council has contributed with 200,000 DKK for relief interventions in Southern Somalia through IAS. The tsunami, triggered by the earthquake in the Indian Ocean, also reached the coastal areas of Somalia, Kenya and Tanzania where huge waves killed dozens of people, officials said.

Somalia, which is located several thousand kilometres away from the trigger point on the Horn of Africa was no exception to the tsunami which were travelling at app. 800 km an hour. Within app. six hours from when the earthquake triggered, the waves were hitting the coasts of East Africa and the Horn of Africa.

The geographical area and target group of the intervention

Marka district has an estimated population of 300,000 while Baraawe has 75,000 people. The targeted population is those that make their living out of fishing. The figures are estimated at 6,000 for Marka and 1,800 for Baraawe.

Using funds from the World Assemblies of God, we have expanded our activities to the regions North of Mogadishu. Working with a local organisation known as Saacid, we have delivered fishing kits to the small fishing town of Warsheikh about 60kms North of Mogadishu.

Activities

- Purchase, delivery and distribution of relief food supplies.
- Purchase, delivery and distribution of assorted fishing equipments.
- Rehabilitation of 5 shallow wells.
- Logistical support incl. hiring trucks for delivering the relief supplies

Mr Nur Sheikh Mohamed Abdi (IAS Somalia Education Supervisor) with the District Commissioner of Warsheikh 62 kms to the North of Mogadishu as they distributed fishing kits there in collaboration with a local organisation known as Saacid. The items were bought with funds from the World Assemblies of God Springfield Missouri- USA through their Area Director for East Africa and the Indian Ocean Basin. Kenya Assemblies of God Church Buruburu also took an offering and extended it to the Tsunami victims of Southern Somalia. This was in response to an IAS appeal for funds in January this year.
