Drilling in Nuba Mountains, Sudan
In 2002 with the Nuba cease fire agreement, IAS water sector opened its doors to
Nuba Mountains in the Southern Kordofan region. It has concentrated its
activities in Western Jebels, which was most stricken during the war.
In the consortium of a UN-led Nuba Mountains Program for Advanced Conflict Transformation (NMPACT),
IAS has been able to work in cross-line operations in the SPLA/M liberated areas as well as
in the government controlled regions. The water programme in Nuba Mountains is mainly being funded by Danida (Denmark).
Below are some pictures that shows you how the drilling is done.

The drilling equipment, funded by Läkarmissionen (Sweden), is pulled by 2 WD vehicles between the drilling sites.

The roads are very bad and it takes time to reach new drilling areas.

Quite often the equipment is pulled through river beds.

When a new site is located the equipment is set up like this.

Now the actual drilling begins.

The drilling depth is between 30-70 meters.

When water has been found a hand pump is mounted.

Clean water is now provided to the local population.
